EN 343 is a standard published by the European Organization for Standardization to assess the water resistance of protective clothing and materials.
A fabric or a garment is judged on two categories:The first (indicated by letter X) judges its ability to protect against rain and humidity. The second letter Y indicates breathability or the level of an item transferring moisture from one side to the other side. Both of them are rated from level 1 to 3, with 3 representing the highest level of protection and 1 representing the lowest protection.
